Situation

This project gathers the research capacities in the field of underground water resources of four countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and France. Three of them are regularly faced with water supply problems. The precariousness of their situation is accentuated by the urbanisation and the risk of pollution of groundwater resources in relation to human activities. The sustainable management of water resources thus seems to be a major stake for all three countries which moreover share the same resources controlled by a geological system -the East African Rift- which underlies them. Therefore these countries are in a situation of interdependence and consequently a joint and regional approach is necessary for the water resources understanding and management.

Objectives of the project

The overall objective of the MAWARI project is to contribute to the improvement of knowledge and understanding of the groundwater life cycle and consequently, to set guidelines to help decision makers for a sustainable management of the water resources in the Rift valley. For this purpose, the project intends to gather scientific expertise of the three countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya) involved in the project, through a four-years regional scientific co-operation. The Mawari project aims to be demand-driven i.e. the selected research projects must contribute at solving problems and may require a multidisciplinary approach.
